Clay Heart

This clay heart is a fridge magnet that will hold a picture of your Valentine.

Age: 12+

Difficulty: Easy

Time scale: 2 out of 5

  • Package of red polymer clay (sculpey or fimo)
  • small pill bottle with lid that is 1.5 inches across
  • sculpting tool or skewer stick
  • white glue
  • paper towel
  • computer
  • printer
  • paper
  • pen
  • scissors
  • small paint brush
  • gold paint
  • magnet
  • hot glue gun and glue
  • patterned vinyl doily

Condition the clay until it has softened and can be shaped easily.

Make a ball about 1.5 inches around. Flatten this down on your work surface so it is about 2.78 inches across and 2.5 inches long. It should be about a 1/4 of an inch thick.

Make a mark with the sculpting tool on the center at the top and push in to start to form the heart shape. Shape a point at the bottom.

Push the lid of a pill bottle into the center. Make the indentation about an 1/8 inch deep. If you are using photo paper for the picture, you will have to make sure that this inside circle is flattened out, with no curve to it.

Use a patterned vinyl doily and push it down slightly to transfer the pattern into the clay.

Remove from the work surface carefully. It might be stuck a bit.

Bake the clay according to the manufacturers instructions. The baking time will depend on the brand you are using.

After baking and cooling, apply gold paint to the clay heart. Use a damp paper towel to wipe some of the paint off.

Print a small picture of you and your valentine from off of your computer. Size it so that it will fit into the indentation made in the heart. If there is a slight curve to the center you will need to use plain paper for the picture. If you have made sure the center is completely flat, you can use photo paper.

Mark it out to the correct size by putting the pill bottle (without the lid on) over the picture and tracing around it with a pen.

Use scissors and cut it out.

Put a small amount of white glue on to the back of the photo and glue it into the center of the heart.

Glue a magnet on to the back of the clay heart using a hot glue gun.
I actually use those free advertising magnets that sometimes come in the mail. I measure and cut to size. Cover the entire back so it is strong enough to hold.

All done!

This is a heartfelt gift to give to your Valentine.
