Supplies:

  • 1/2 ounce pkg. orange sculpey
  • 1 ounce pkg. yellow sculpey
  • light yellow paint
  • dark brown paint
  • float medium
  • small paint brush
  • small wire brush
  • pointed sculpting tool or toothpick
  • tin foil
  • paper towel
  • toaster oven

 Starfish Craft Instructions

Condition both the yellow and orange clay. Make a 1 inch ball of yellow clay and a 1/2 inch ball of orange. Mix together. Adjust the mixture, until you have the color you like.

Flatten to about 2 inches around. Make lines with a needle tool or toothpick.

Space evenly around the circle so there are 5 sections; kind of like pie sections.

Cut all the way through, but leave attached around the center of the circle.

Fold the pieces under. Now pinch and squeeze each section to form the legs. Leave the legs wide at the middle and narrow at the end. Form them into a point at the ends. Do 5 legs.

Turn over and push in the center, forcing it up in the middle on the other side. Smooth the back side. There is no need to add details to the underside, because it won't be showing.

Turn back, so it is right side is up. Smooth and add more shape to the center and to the legs. Add a slight bend in each leg so they don't just go straight out. If you would like it to be clinging to something, check  the fit now. Mine is going to be hanging on the edge of a beach sign, so I bend the legs to fit.

Use a small wire brush to add
texture. Use the pointed sculpting tool or a toothpick to add slightly larger holes for more texture, down each leg.

Roll small pieces of tin foil and add under the edge of the legs where they bend, to support them during baking.

Bake in the oven at 275 degrees for approximately 15-20 minutes. Directions for sculpey III is  to bake for 15 minutes per 1/4 inch of thickness. Please adjust baking times for the type of clay you are using.

After this has been baked and has cooled, dry brush on a bit of bright yellow paint. Let dry.

Mix a drop of dark brown paint with 3 or 4  drops of floating medium and apply with a paint brush. Let sit for about 30 seconds. Well, maybe a little longer, but that is about all the patience I have. I wanna get this thing DONE!! Wipe with a damp paper towel. This painting step will make the texture more visible.

Tadaaaa!! Finished. This starfish craft can be attached to a shell, rock or beach sign. You could even add a pin on the back and make it into a broach.
