Polymer Clay Flower

Here are instructions for making a polymer clay flower for your Mom for Mother's Day. Mother's can make you laugh, make you cry, make you happy and sometimes make you mad. They love you and you love them, no matter what.

Don't forget to tell your Mom how special she is. You sometimes just don't realize how important it is to do that, until it is too late. Yes, that sounds cliche`but it is very true. It seems like you have all the time in the world, there is always tomorrow but sometimes tomorrow never comes.

This yellow rose was made in loving memory of my Mom. Unfortunately, I will never get to spend another Mother's Day with her.

To make your polymer clay flower start by mixing the 1/2 ounce of translucent and the 1/4 ounce of yellow sculpey® together until well blended.

Roll a piece into a 1/4 inch ball. Squish it down into a flat circle. It doesn't have to be a perfectly round circle but it has to be quite thin.

Cut a piece of wire to about 10 inches long.  Make sure the wire is quite sturdy so it will support the weight of the rose when it is completed. Use pliers to make a small hook on the end.

Wrap the circle of clay around the hooked end of the wire to form the inside of the polymer clay flower. Squeeze closed at the bottom against the wire to secure. The top should be opened a bit but not much. The wire shouldn't be showing.

Make another round ball, about the same size. Form into a petal by pushing the ball down into a thin circle. Put around the center piece, overlapping the seam. Squeeze around the wire at the bottom. Bend and fold the petals of the flowers over slightly, along the top edge to shape.

Do one more ball the same size and do the same thing. Each petal should be opened more at the top. Work your way in a counter clockwise direction, as you add the petals. Always make sure to overlap the seam from the last petal you put on.

Now make the balls slightly bigger so the petals will be a bit larger. Continue until you have done nine petals, including the center one. If you would like a fuller flower, you can do more. If you would like to make your polymer clay rose larger, use bigger balls of clay to make the petals bigger.

To make the leaves, use the green sculpey®. Use a large pea sized piece for each leaf. Roll into a ball, flatten. Use a needle tool to push the lines into the leaf. Shape a point on the end. Push on to the wire, under the flower petals. Add another leaf next to it in the same way.

Now add a small piece of green underneath the leaves and up on to the flower, to give the leaves extra support.

Wrap-stem

Put the wire of the polymer clay flower down into the opening of an empty pop can. Make sure it is balanced so it won't tip over.

Bake in the oven according to manufacturers directions for the type of clay that you are using. Different types require different baking times.

Fimo® is: 230 degrees F for 30 minutes
Sculpey III®: 275 degrees for 15 minutes per 1/4 inch
Sculpey Premo®: 275 for 30 minutes per 1/4 inch

When cooled, wrap the wire with green florists tape. Start at the top, underneath the polymer clay rose. Add a bit of white glue. Florists tape sticks well to itself but not to the clay. Just a dab of glue at the start will work fine. Wrap the wire with two layers of tape.

Cut a piece of pretty scrap book paper into a 2 x 3.5 inch rectangle. Fold in half. With a felt pen write a special message or poem inside to your Mom.

Put a small hole in the upper left corner with your needle tool and run a 5 inch long piece of gold thread through the hole, double up and tie. Hook carefully around one of the leaves.

Small-card

This polymer clay flower is one that will live forever. It is to represent the love for my Mother that will forever live in my heart.

Make one for your Mom. You will be glad you did.
